Alongside the contemporary works of the 6th generation, the exhibition features a rare selection of masterpieces by the 5th generation Ito Sekisui, allowing visitors to experience the enduring legacy and artistic evolution of the Ito family in one immersive space.

About the Exhibition

The roots of this exhibition lie in Sado Island, Niigata, Japan, where the unique mineral "Mumyoi," rich in iron oxide and renowned for its deep red hue, is found. Since the Meiji era, when the 9th generation Tomotaro established the high-temperature firing technique for Mumyoi, the "Sekisui" name has been a beacon of this ceramic tradition. Born in 1977, the 6th generation artist brings a unique perspective shaped by both his family heritage and his philosophical background, reflecting the rugged nature of Sado Island through a modern, refined aesthetic lens.

This exhibition showcases the latest creative explorations by the 6th generation Ito Sekisui. Highlights include the "Grey Series," which emphasizes stone-like textures with subtle, wave-like line patterns, and the "Black Series," which creates a striking visual contrast between mysterious black glaze and the inherent red of the Mumyoi clay. By incorporating white Nosaka clay, the artist translates the "volcanic memory" of his lineage into evocative imagery resembling the interplay of ocean waves and sky.
