Overview

The Tai Po District Dragon Boat Race boasts a rich history dating back to before 1941, when coastal villagers from Shuen Wan, Ting Kok, and Tai Mei Tuk first held dragon boat competitions. Since 1960, organized by the Tai Po Rural Committee and various government departments, the event grew into one of the top three major local community celebrations in Hong Kong, frequently officiated by the Governor of Hong Kong in the colonial era. In 1982, the Tai Po District Dragon Boat Race Committee was established by seven local organizations to ensure the event's professional coordination.

Evolution of the Venue

As the Tai Po New Town developed, the venue evolved. Early races were held in the waters of Yuen Chau Tsai. In the early 1980s, the event moved to the Shuen Wan Reservoir dam, and subsequently to the Tai Po Industrial Estate in 1985. Since the opening of the purpose-built dragon boat racing course at Tai Po Waterfront Park in 1994, the event has been held there annually. It is now widely regarded as one of the finest dragon boat racing venues in all of Hong Kong.
