Overview

The 26th day of the first lunar month is the traditional "Kuan Yin Borrowing" (Kuan Yin Open Treasury) festival in Hong Kong, a deeply ingrained cultural practice during the Lunar New Year. Devotees visit various temples to seek blessings from the Goddess of Mercy, symbolically "borrowing" wealth and fortune, with a solemn commitment to return the following year.

Historical Roots

The origins of this practice are often linked to the Kuan Yin Temple on Tai Ping Shan Street. Decades ago, during times of hardship, the temple manager Mr. Tang Cheuk-wan initiated this ritual to help under-resourced children. Donations made during the "repayment" of these symbolic loans were used to fund education and support those in need. In modern times, the Hung Hom Kuan Yin Temple is particularly renowned for being considered highly responsive, attributed to its resilience through historical conflicts.

Guidelines for Borrowing and Repayment

Borrowing Rituals

  • Offerings: Prepare a set of Kuan Yin paper offerings, a pair of large candles, nine incense sticks (three per round), fresh fruit, flowers, and Shou Jin (gold paper).
  • The Procedure: Sincerity is paramount. Light the candles, offer incense, and silently pray for the Kuan Yin treasury. Once finished, burn the paper offerings and keep the traditional lucky token or red packet provided by the temple in your wallet as a symbol of your borrowed fortune.

Repayment Rituals

  • Best Timing: Repayment must be completed within the 12th lunar month, before the new annual treasury opens.
  • The Procedure: Prepare the necessary offerings again. Inform the deity of your repayment and gratitude for the past year's protection, then burn the remnants of your previous lucky tokens and fresh offerings to complete the ritual cycle.

For 2027, the Kuan Yin Borrowing will be held at various sites, including the Hung Hom Kuan Yin Temple, Tai Hang Lin Fa Kung, Shau Kei Wan Tin Hau Temple, Sham Shui Po Sam Tai Tsz and Pak Tai Temple, and the Wan Chai Pak Tai Temple.

Note: Please be aware that individual temples may have specific regulations regarding the quantity and types of offerings permitted within their premises. It is recommended to check ahead.
